The disciplines "Regional Studies", as well as "History and Culture of Kazakhstan" are an integral part of the educational process at the Department of Language and General Education training for foreigners. The teachers of the department are confident that a foreign student who aims to master a language (Russian and/or Kazakh) needs to learn more about the country of study as much as possible. This contributes to the achievement of several tasks facing the teacher. Let's identify some of them.
Firstly, the expansion of active vocabulary related to orientation in space and time. In particular, we are talking about her layer, which does not have enough time for grammar lessons, reading, writing, speaking, listening. However, this language material is in high demand already at the beginning of foreigners' stay in our country. Secondly, the subjects "Regional Studies", "History and Culture of Kazakhstan" play an important role in the successful adaptation of a foreign citizen to a new cultural environment. Thirdly, the knowledge gained in the classes in the above - mentioned disciplines expands and deepens the general educational level of students. Fourthly, it is not uncommon for students, having begun to get acquainted with the history and present day of the Republic of Kazakhstan, subsequently became seriously interested in various aspects of the life of our country. For example, historical facts and events related to the residence of representatives of various nationalities (Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, etc.) on the territory of Kazakhstan in general, and in the city of Almaty in particular. Fifth, students begin to show interest and respect for the multinational culture of the people inhabiting one of the largest countries on the Eurasian continent. It should be emphasized that in the classes of "Regional Studies", "History and Culture of Kazakhstan", teachers provide relevant information, actively using visualization (demonstration of video materials, watching short educational films, etc.), taking into account the linguistic and cultural peculiarities of students' perception of information depending on the country of arrival.
Study tours occupy a special place in the curriculum. Their names speak for themselves: "Almaty in architectural monuments", "Cultural centers of Almaty", "Almaty theaters", "Medeo and Shymbulak – pearls of the mountains of Almaty", "Tales and legends of Kok Tobe", "Astana – the capital of independent Kazakhstan", "Kazakhstanis - heroes of the Great Patriotic War", "Turkestan – the center of spiritual culture" and others.
By introducing foreign students to the history and modernity of our country, teachers put into practice the ideas proclaimed by the SDGs. Namely, the development of "global citizenship" skills among international students through regional studies, the formation of intercultural dialogue through language education to achieve partnership for sustainable development. In conclusion, we note that all of the above contributes to improving the quality of education for foreign students at the al - Farabi Kazakh National University.
